Tod and Buz find work in a Cleveland steel mill and become part of Cleveland's Polish community when they befriend the family Jack Kolodziedjcak, a respected "mouliak" (strong, fearless worker). When the daughter of Jack's friend is murdered and Jack's son Janos (Robert Redford) is a suspect, Tod and Buz rush to find Janos before his father and the angry mob find him first.
